The first McDonald's restaurant was opened in 1940 in San Bernardino, California, USA by Richard and Maurice McDonald.

Although they opened the first McDonald's branch on April 15, 1955, there were 228 McDonald's branches in 1961. In 1961, the brothers were very satisfied with the functioning and system of McDonald's and did not take kindly to the expansion policy advocated by Kroc.

Kroc, who could not see the strength he wanted in the duo, bought McDonald's from the brothers for 2.7 million dollars (about 21 million dollars today). Kroc established a restaurant chain with the same name as McDonald's, which consists of the branches he opened. The Donald brothers couldn't do anything because Ray Kroc was many times richer than the brothers from branches and real estate income. Kroc had promised to pay the Donald brothers naming rights for each new restaurant he opened, but these were not written down. The McDonald brothers are thought to have lost their naming rights by cheating.

After the acquisition, Kroc laid out its progress plan and the company now operates in close to 35,000 stores in 118 countries around the world. Kroc took everything from the McDonald brothers and turned a single restaurant into a worldwide fast-food chain.

McDonald's today operates more than 34,000 restaurants in more than 119 countries. More than 13,000 of them are located outside of the United States. About 80% of the restaurants are run by the operators, while the others are run by the McDonald's company itself.

An average of 69 million people in the world visit McDonald's restaurants every day. The number of employees in McDonald's restaurants around the world exceeds 1.8 million. In the US, 98% of the population goes to McDonald's at least once a year.

McDonald's operations worldwide are managed from the company's headquarters in Oak Brook, near Chicago, in the USA. Every year, thousands of McDonald's operators and employees from all over the world learn the intricacies of the 'hamburger business' at McDonald's international education center, also located in Oak Brook.

The impressive story of McDonald's was transferred to the silver screen in 2016. You can watch the movie 'The Founder' directed by John Lee Hancock and starring Michael Keanton.
